Why this move matters

Most money stress comes from not knowing your real position. Your balances are scattered: a checking app here, a savings account there, a card or two, maybe some cash. Vondo starts by bringing all of it into one view, the real numbers, not a guess. Once you can see the whole picture, you are in a position to steer it. Every other move in the method builds on this total.

Do it in Vondo

1. Open Accounts and add your first one. Give it a name, choose the type (checking, savings, cash, credit card, or loan), and enter its real current balance.

2. Add the rest the same way. Include every account that holds money you spend or owe: your checking, any savings, the cash you carry, and each credit card.

3. For a credit card or a loan, enter what you owe. Vondo tracks debt as its own kind of account, so it stays visible instead of hidden, and it sets up a payment category so you have somewhere to budget that payment. A card files itself; for a loan you choose which group that category goes in, and Debt Payments is a sensible name if you make a new one.

What you should see now

Your accounts list shows every balance, and the total across your spending accounts is the money you actually have right now. That total is the number you will steer in the next move. If a balance looks off, open the account and check it against your bank. Getting this right is worth the minute.

Where this total goes

Add up your spending accounts: checking, savings, and cash. That same total starts out as your Unassigned amount at the top of the budget: the whole pool, waiting to be given a purpose. Credit cards and loans are debts, not money to budget, so they stay out of that number. The one category already sitting there came with your credit card: Vondo gives every card and loan a payment category, so there is always somewhere to assign that payment. Money only takes on a purpose once it has a category to sit in, and creating those is the next move.

Vondo budget screen for a new household: the sidebar shows 2,450 in checking and 6,000 in savings alongside a credit card at -840, and Unassigned reads 8,450, so the card is not subtracted.
